Geneva residents are able to grow their own fruits, vegetables, and flowers at the Prairie Green Preserve Community Garden.
The Geneva Park District offers 124 20’ x 30’ plots to residents. The Community Garden plots will be made available through a joint effort by the City of Geneva, the Geneva Park District, and the Forest Preserve District of Kane County. The Community Garden plots are located on a 40-acre parcel within Prairie Green owned by the Forest Preserve District.
In 2011, the City and the Forest Preserve District entered into an annexation agreement and a use permit/license agreement so the City could provide water service to the Community Garden plots.
Under the terms of the agreement, the City installed a potable water service line at a cost not to exceed $25,000. In addition, the cost of water usage beyond $300 per year will be paid by the Park District or Forest Preserve District at applicable water usage rates.
The license agreement also gives the Park District the right to use, develop, operate and maintain the garden plots on the Forest Preserve site. That same year, the City of Geneva annexed the 40-acre parcel. In addition to the Community Garden Plots, a 30 space parking lot will also be constructed.
