Prairie Green Preserve contains a 1.25 mile hiking and biking trail surfaced with crushed limestone. A total of four miles of trail are planned. The 1.25 mile section of trail was completed in 2010.
The trail provides an inter-community link between the Great Western Trail to north and the Peck Farm Park Path to the south. The trail is part of the Mid-County Trail, as shown on the Kane and Northern Kendall Counties bicycle map. Trailhead motor vehicle parking will be available at the parking lot being constructed at the Community Garden plot.
Funding for the trail was made possible by a grant from the Recreational Trails Program (RTP). The RTP was created through the National Recreation Trail Fund Act, which was enacted as part of the Intermodal Surface Transportation Act of 1991.
In Illinois, RTP funds are administered through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources with cooperation with the Illinois Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration. The RTP program provides 80 percent federal funding on approved projects and requires a 20 percent non-federal funding match.
