TREE PRESERVATION
In order to maintain the long term health of Geneva's urban forest, property owners in the categories described below will be required to participate in a Tree Preservation Plan Review process prior to removing trees over 10" in diameter (at approx. 4' above ground).
Property Owners Submitting Applications for Building Permits or Site Development Plan Reviews: Since most tree loss occurs from root damage during construction, owners of properties (with large trees) where building or development is proposed in the vicinity of mature trees are required to complete a Tree Preservation Plan Review. This includes filing an application with the Building Department and having their site reviewed by Geneva's certified arborist. As a part of this process owners select which trees are to be removed, relocated or protected. However, standard tree protection measures must be put in place for large, high quality species trees located in the construction/ preservation zone (as indicated by the owner) prior to the start of construction.
Property Owners who's Lots are Equal to or Greater Than 1.5 Acres regardless if there are plans to develop/build or not: Due to the "potential" for construction and development on lots of this size, these property owners are required to complete a Tree Removal Permit Review prior to removing large trees. This process, which includes a site review by Geneva's certified arborist, ensures that a well-informed decision is made prior to tree removal.
