POTENTIAL SOUTH GENEVA HISTORIC DISTRICT
In response to objectives in the 2017 Strategic Plan and the adopted 2008 City of Geneva Historic Preservation Plan, Staff and a study group has performed a windshield survey of buildings and identified a study area for a potential historic district generally bordered by the Fox River, Meadows Road, Cheever Avenue, and Fargo Boulevard. The area is referred to as the South Geneva Study Area.
The potential district contains many fine examples of Geneva’s historic and architecturally significant structures. A variety of styles and building types are present from the high styled Italianate and Queen Anne to the more humble bungalow to mid-century modern styles. The historic structures remain unprotected from extensive modification, demolition and subdivision development. Geneva’s downtown contains buildings that represent the early history of the City. The South Geneva Study Area is equally important to Geneva’s history, as it shows, through its architecture, how Geneva has evolved over time.
But, is a South Geneva Historic District supported by property owners?
Are there alternative approaches that may be used to preserve historic or architecturally significant structures in the study area?
Please join us for an important discussion on historic preservation and your neighborhood.
