In order to ensure our community’s growth is sustainable and that growth pressures do not diminish the City’s high quality of life, Geneva’s Economic Development Department is charged with encouraging business growth and tax diversification.

The Department meets this charge through its programs to attract new commercial, office/research and light industrial developments and by creating and fostering successful programs to retain and build existing business activities within the City of Geneva. To this end, Geneva’s Economic Development Department:

• Maintains the Geneva Community Profile which provides a snapshot of the City, including the cost of doing business in Geneva.
• Works closely with other City Departments, such as Planning, Public Works and Police and Fire, to ensure that prospective commercial, office/research and industrial development interests find a clearly identified and manageable site selection and approval process when considering the City of Geneva to grow their respective business.
• Serves as the City of Geneva liaison to the Geneva Chamber of Commerce, the Kane County Economic Development Department, Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity and the vocational training programs at Waubonsee Community College and Elgin Community College.
• Maintains an inventory of available land and building spaces suitable for commercial and industrial prospects. This service is offered at no charge to the property owner or his or her representative. • Serves as a strong advocate in the consideration and ultimate management of a number of economic development incentive programs offered by the City of Geneva, including a City’s Tax Increment Finance District, the downtown building Facade Improvement Grant Program and Sign Grant Program and city-sponsored sales tax reimbursement agreements. .

Since 1990, the City of Geneva has experienced tremendous growth in employment, population and household counts. With over 700,000 s.f. of commercial space, our downtown business district is recognized across the country as one of America's best downtowns. The City works diligently to maintain the district and assist our local businesses. A Downtown Master Plan study is underway.
