The City of Geneva Economic Development Department has compiled a Business Resource Guide on City Departments you will work with when opening your business in the City of Geneva. Services include – Help identifying your best location; Planning & Zoning; Building Inspection & obtaining your “Certificate of Occupancy;” Public Works programs & utility connections; Fire & Police services; business licensing; and more. In addition to City services you will find a list of county, state, township, and federal resources. Our Community Profile, Business Resource Guide, Demographics Report, Retail Market Potential Report, Traffic Count Map, and Available Sites Inventory will help you with your business planning. Liquor Licensing: Certain types of liquor licenses are granted with the consent of the City Council; all types are reviewed by the Geneva Police Department and Liquor Commissioner. Liquor Licensing information can be found in Title 4, Chapter 2 of the City Municipal Code found at www.geneva.il.us. If you wish to sell Alcohol in your place of business, please start the application process as soon as possible as not all elements of approval such as background checks are under the City’s control; avoid delays – apply early. Building Permits: A building permit and/or Change of Tenant permit is required for occupancy of all structures within the City of Geneva.

Historic Preservation Review: A significant portion of Downtown Geneva is within a Historic Preservation District. A map is found here.
