The Geneva Cultural Arts Commission will be once again sponsoring a Sno Sculpting Exhibition at Geneva Commons from January 20-23, 2010. Four professional teams and four high school teams will compete. Please stop by and see how they take a block of packed snow and turn it into a piece of art. The snow molds will be packed on January 16-17 and the artists will begin work on January 20. Awards will be made on January 23. Look for discounts and offers made by Geneva Commons businesses.
Now in its second year, the snow sculpting exhibition is sponsored by the Geneva Cultural Arts Commission and will take place at the east end of Dick’s Sporting Goods parking lot. Preparations for this community event will begin Jan. 14 and 15 as Raging Buffalo fills the air with fresh falling snow. On Jan. 16, V.I.P. Property Management will put their front loaders into action to fill the sculptors molds, as the teams pack them into forms.
Four adult teams will include 2009 Sno Sculpting winner and local artist Joe Gagnepain known for his 2008 international award-winning team, the Starving Carvists. Three high school teams from Batavia, Marengo and Kaneland high schools also will participate in the student portion of the competition.
The public is invited to observe the artists in action and to vote for their favorite creation. Voting for the People’s Choice award will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23. In addition, visitors will receive gift bags packed with merchant discounts and give-aways.
An awards ceremony will be held the evening of Jan. 23, and the winners will be announced.
Volunteers are needed to assist with packing snow into molds on Jan. 16, and to staff the snow house and warming house from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Jan. 20-22 and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Jan. 23.
