Curbside Mailbox Ordinance
To minimize damage to mailboxes throughout the City due to City snow removal efforts, the following standards should be met when installing your roadside mailbox:
  • Mailbox supports, including but not limited to posts, brackets, platforms, or supports, shall be a minimum of 4 feet by 4 feet treated wood, or 2 inch in diameter standard steel or aluminum pipe;
  • Mailboxes or supporting structures shall be installed or maintained, within but not closer, than 9 to 12 inches form the edge of the street pavement or the back of the street curb where such curb exists;
  • The bottom surface of mailbox shall be not less than 36 inches and not exceeding 42 inches from the ground surface.
  •  Mailboxes and supporting fixtures shall not be installed within 10 feet of the point of curvature at any street intersection.

In the event of damage to a non-conforming mailbox installation due to City snow removal efforts, no compensation will be made, and the property owner will be responsible for the repair or replacement of that mailbox installation.

In the event there is damage to any mailbox that conforms to the standards above as a result of and caused by the snow removal activities conducted by the City, the City shall not be responsible for any cost of repair or replacement thereto in excess of $25.

Any such reimbursement of cost to the owner of a damaged mailbox shall be made only upon the presentation of satisfactory evidence of sales receipts for materials used in such repair and replacement. All labor or cost of labor to install or re-install said mailboxes shall be the responsibility of the owner of the mailbox. All claims of the damaged mailboxes caused by the

City snow plows must be presented to the Public Works Department within 30 days of the date of the incident that caused the damage to the mailboxes. If the claims do not fall within the 30 day period the City will not be responsible the repairs.
