Parkway Tree Replacement Program
Tree plantingThis program is for those residing in Geneva's corporate city limits. If you live in Mill Creek, call Blackberry Township 630-365-6580.

Program Summary

The City has an ongoing parkway tree replacement program. Parkway trees are defined as trees within City right-of-way, usually located between the sidewalk/property-line and curb.

The City, through a contract with the West Suburban Tree Consortium, is able to purchase trees at discount prices. Under the program, the resident pays $150 and the City pays the remainder of the cost to purchase and plant a new tree.  The City’s cost is more than $150.

Important Dates
The nursery needs a few months of lead time to prepare for the order. Below are the important dates:

Completed forms are due at Public Works   2nd Friday in January
Trees will be planted  Month of April

Fall Planting Dates (as necessary)
Completed forms are due at Public Works  2nd Friday in June

Approved Tree Species
The City has worked with the nursery to choose appropriate trees for our parkways. As we have learned with the Emerald Ash Borer infestation of ash trees, it is very important to diversify our tree species.

Another example of a diversification problem in Geneva’s urban forest is an overabundance of maples. Maples are a great tree, but they currently make up about 1/3 of all parkway tree species. For diversification purposes the City will not be planting maples for the foreseeable future so that we can get to a more appropriate ratio.

Tree species and location within the parkway will be evaluated by City staff on a case-by-case basis. There is a limit to the number and species of trees that can be planted each year, so all requests for replacement trees will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Below is a listing of approved parkway trees with species information links. Availability may vary. Trees will be between 2 and 2.5 inches.

Common Hackberry       Hybrid Elm   Kentucky Coffeetree
European Beech   Ironwood  Red Spire Pear
European Hornbeam  Ivory Silk Japanese Tree Lilac  Bur Oak (spring planting only)
Ginkgo  Katsura Tree (not available at this time) Red Oak (spring planting only)
 Skyline Honeylocust

Warranty
The nursery provides a 12-month warranty. If the tree is not looking healthy at anytime during the first 12 months after planting, please call Public Works for an inspection. We will not be able to get a free replacement tree after the 12-month warranty period has expired.

Tree Maintenance
It is very important to properly maintain the newly planted tree. This door hanger will be provided to you after the tree has been planted.

Forms
If you would like to participate in the Parkway Tree Replacement Program, please fill out and return this form.

Planting Parking Trees Outside of this Program
Residents may also plant their own parkway tree at their own cost. A right-of-way permit is required prior to installation, and City staff must review the species, size and location. Please contact Geneva Public Works for information 630-232-1502.
