Peddlers & Solicitors
Are peddlers and solicitors allowed in the City of Geneva?

Yes, solicitors and peddlers are allowed under certain conditions. , Geneva City Code (see Title 4, Chapter 8, Peddlers and Solicitors). Please take note of the following points:

  • Peddlers and solicitors are allowed to market and sell products door-to-door in the City unless a “No Solicitor” sign is posted on the door of the residence or business. Download and print a “No Solicitor” sign

  • Soliciting and peddling may not occur prior to 9 a.m. or after 9 p.m. on weekdays and Saturdays and not on any Sunday or holiday.

  • Any peddler or solicitor who ignores the “No Solicitor” posted signage is in violation of the Geneva City Code which provides for fines up to $400.

  • Residents who experience a solicitor who is disregarding the “No Solicitor” signs or if they feel threatened, they should call 911 to have an officer respond to identify and educate the solicitors and/or take enforcement action (i.e. issue them an ordinance ticket) when appropriate.

  • At times, some residents are hesitant to contact 911 for a solicitor complaint because they do not feel it is an emergency. However if an officer is needed to speak with the solicitor because the resident feels harassed or threatened, then calling 911 is appropriate.

  • Officers should not be called because a solicitor is rude, lacks professionalism or if the resident is simply annoyed by solicitors in general. However, if the solicitor is acting in a manner that the resident wants an officer to speak to the solicitor, the Geneva Police Department is happy to respond and investigate the complaint.

Any general questions regarding the City Code relative to peddling and soliciting should be directed to the Police Department non-emergency number at 630-232-4736.
