Christmas Music in Geneva's Historic Churches

The Steeple Walk, held the Sunday after Geneva's Christmas Walk, is a rare opportunity to sample several holiday musical performancesmusicians with drums in the setting of some of Geneva’s historic churches. Performers vary each year and have included choirs, jazz ensembles, steel drum musicians and a capella singers. You will be treated to a variety of folk songs, instrumentals and Christmas classics. The Steeple Walk consists of four churches, and each performance lasts about 20 minutes. You also will learn about the history and architecture of these unique churches.

About the Steeple Walk

Four concerts are held at participating Geneva churches: First Church of Christ, Scientist, 111 S. Second St.; Geneva Lutheran Church, 301 S. Third St., United Methodist Church, 211 Hamilton St. and Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva, 102-110 S. Second St. Two audience groups attend concerts played simultaneously at two churches, and then switch places. A Steeple Walk guide escorts the group and shares information about architecture of each site. Due to church size, the audience groups are limited to 125 each.

Steeple Walk History

The first Steeple Walk was held in 2004. Organized by the Geneva Forum for Arts and Education, the event brought together a diverse lineup of musicians performing in the city’s historic downtown churches. The Forum for Arts and Education was an independent nonprofit organization that grew out of Geneva’s strategic planning process and was the forerunner to the Cultural Arts Commission.

The Steeple Walk was a popular addition to Geneva’s annual Christmas Walk until the Forum dissolved. In 2009, the Cultural Arts Commission revived the tradition by sponsoring the Steeple Walk as one of its events.
