Longtime Geneva resident, Larry Johnson developed an interest in sculpture inspired by his teacher Rev. Joseph Heyd, O.S.B. at St. Bede Academy. In the Fine Arts program at Fontbonne College in St. Louis, Larry served as the studio assistant to Rudolph Torrini, a nationally known figurative sculptor, and as a student of Ivan Mestrovic. In graduate studies at the University of Chicago, Larry studied with Virginio Ferrari, an internationally known sculptor, and Harold Rosenberg, a noted New York art critic and author. His graduate studies culminated with a MFA in sculpture. Larry's early works, primarily figurative, are found in the collections of the Archbishop of Toronto, Southern Illinois University Museum, St. Mark's Parish, Peoria, Chase Bank, Mercy Hospital, Holy Guardian Angel Church and numerous private collections. Larry's works provide abstract glimpses into evidences of life on many levels, including organic lyrical forms symbolic of movement and wing-like, angelic images. He works within a panel format modeling clay and drawing, as if to create a painting in relief. The pieces are later molded and cast into bronze. Larry also sculpts portraits and figurative works upon commission.
