Commuter Parking Deck Expansion
Commuter Parking DeckParking Deck Reopens In February
Commuters returned to their familiar morning routine when the Third Street Commuter Parking Deck reopened Feb. 1 for the first time in six months.

The first two levels of the deck will be available for parking, and the daily fee remains the same price at $2.

Construction on the new third tier expansion project is substantially completed, but the area needs to be sealed, striped and painted in the spring when temperatures are warmer. Other landscaping work and miscellaneous punch list items also will take place then.

Project Background - Building A Third Tier
The Third Street Commuter Parking Deck was closed in August 2014 for six months to add a third tier to the existing structure. The first two levels reopened in February 2015.

The $4.5 million project, which will provide an additional 180 parking spaces, is being funded entirely by grants through Metra. Construction is anticipated to be completed in the winter with additional restoration work being finished next spring.

The expansion project was approved by Metra, the Regional Transit Authority, Illinois Department of Transportation and the Geneva City Council.

The deck is being expanded in order to accommodate parking that will be lost as part of Union Pacific's future plans to add a third rail line, which will remove some existing surface parking spaces.

Once completed, the expanded deck will provide parking for about 540 vehicles. Metra will reimburse the City the entire $4.5 million cost for the parking deck project.

Construction Update
The parking deck's Second Street entrance will be closed for five to seven days as Walsh Construction is planning to install a trench drain starting April 10. Commuters will still be able to access the parking deck from Third Street.

Crews will be restoring the pavement around the drain with concrete, which needs time to cure.

Walsh has been directed to post advance signage at the intersection of South and Second streets to warn drivers of the entrance closure. Signage also will be provided in the garage and work site.

The entire deck will be closed Saturday, April 18 to finish painting work that was started last weekend. The facility should be open Sunday, April 19.

The new third level of the parking deck is scheduled to open in late spring.
