2018 Pewter Ornament
The ninth part in a series of City-themed ornaments, this year's ornament features the iconic Fabyan Windmill, which is located in the Fabyan Forest Preserve. The 68-foot, five-story structure was originally built by German craftsman Louis Blackhaus, between 1850 and 1860. The windmill originally was located in Lombard but was moved to Geneva in 1914 after being purchased by George Fabyan.
After years of planning to restore the structure to its original grandeur, including trips to the Netherlands for authentic timber and gear work, the windmill was renovated in 2005.
The Fabyan Windmill was named to the National Register of Historic Places, and it was featured on a U.S. postal stamp in 1980. The 15-cent stamp was part of a series of five American windmills included in a stamp booklet called "Windmills USA." The windmill is managed by the Kane County Forest Preserve District and is open weekends from 1 to 4 p.m. May 15 to Oct. 15.
