Powering Up

Power Restored
Geneva owns and operates its own electric utility, and we take great pride in providing reliable electric service to our residents and businesses. However, like all utilities, we are susceptible to outages caused by bad weather, animals, equipment issues and more. This blog is designed to provide updates on what caused outages after service has been restored. Large-scale incidents will be posted in real-time on the City's Alert Center on our website homepage. Customers can subscribe to receive these updates via Notify Me.

[ARCHIVED] Calling All Gluten-Free, You Will Not Go Hungry in Geneva

The original item was published from January 24, 2019 11:24 AM to September 16, 2020 3:59 PM

Have you ever noticed that some restaurant menus include the letters “GF” after the entrée name or note that diners should ask their server about gluten-free options? Many Geneva restaurants have responded to the growing popularity of the gluten-free diet, by expanding their menu and making the selections easy to find.
GF
The gluten-free diet (GFD) is one of the most popular diet trends in the U.S. According to a 2015 Gallop poll, one in five people now reduce or eliminate gluten. A survey taken from 2009 to 2014 found that the number of people following the GFD grew from 0.5 to 2 percent of the population. Some people are following medical recommendations to avoid serious negative health effects, while others are making a dietary change to get healthy.

Those with a GFD and their loved ones will often browse online menus, before they even leave home. It truly is a sad night if you arrive at a restaurant with nothing to eat but a side dish. We talked to GF locals and read online reviews and found Geneva is home to many eateries with GF entrees for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Buttermilk
Nosh, Buttermilk, and Egg Harbor are breakfast and lunch spots with fantastic GF menu items. Nosh offers yummy GF breakfast bowls, French toast and chilaquillas. Buttermilk has a separate GF and vegan menu, which features 14 different items. Egg Harbor's website features a handy tool for users to select up to eight ingredients they wish to avoid. The tool will then generate a custom menu. Wow, Egg Harbor.

Egg Harbor
Bien Trucha, Preservation, Fiora’s, Patton House, Craft Urban, and Firewater BBQ all have a number of GF fans. Did you know that more than half of the menu at Bien Trucha, a popular Mexican restaurant, is actually GF? Preservation offers a variety of GF soups, salads, and deconstructed sandwiches on beautiful stone serving boards. You can also order GF sharables, savory bites, and large plate dishes. The majority of Fiora's dinner entrées have a cute little GF symbol, including Pan Roasted Salmon, Chicken Forestiere, and Steak Oscar. Hungry yet?

Riganato
Riganato Old World Grille has one of the largest GF menus in Geneva. Those with a GFD can now find delicious pasta and pizza at many local favorites. It is nice to be able to order carry out with the rest of your family on pizza night. Aurelio’s and Nancy’s Pizza are popular choices for their tasty GF crust, but don't let this stop you from trying the other fab pizza joints here. Chianti’s, Gia Mia, and Livia are also excellent Italian restaurants for a GF lunch or date night.

Sweet Natalies
This blog would not be complete without mentioning Sweet Natalie’s, a dedicated GF bakery on Third Street. This adorable shop sells baked goods made by a cooperative of independent bakers. Their products can meet the needs of anyone with dietary restrictions, such as Paleo, vegan, and nut free options. Eye Candy Bake Shop and Qs Kitchen, which just opened on Stevens St, are also a great sources of GF carryout.

It is Geneva Restaurant Week, so make your way over here by Sunday to eat! We hope you do your own exploring and stumble across more GF must-haves. There is not enough room to mention everyone here, but a complete restaurant list is on our new mobile-friendly Explore Geneva Map
