Power Outage
A section of downtown Geneva business customers lost power Feb. 24 after a fire damaged an electric transformer on North Third Street.

The outage stemmed from a cable/connector failure in the primary compartment of the electric transformer around 3:33 p.m. The failure triggered a fire that significantly damaged the transformer. The Geneva Fire Department responded to the scene to extinguish the blaze.

Sixty-three customers lost service in an area bounded by Route 31, State Street (Route 38), Third Street and Hamilton Street. The Geneva Public Works Department was able to restore service to about half the impacted customers by 7 p.m. Feb. 24.

The remaining customers were back online by 5:15 a.m. Feb. 25 as crews had to replace the transformer, splice out secondary lines and reterminate primary cable. Crews also dealt with significant wind gusts and dropping temperatures throughout the evening.

Other Outages
A tree limb, likely knocked down by strong winds, fell into an overhead power line at 8:19 a.m. Feb. 24 on the City's west side.

Service was disrupted for 27 residents living in the 1900 to 2200 blocks of South Street, 1900 to 2300 blocks of Kaneville Road and the 300 block of Fritz Lane. Public Works crews were able to remove the limb, refuse the line and restore service at 9:34 a.m. Feb. 24

In the 2000 block of South Batavia Avenue (Route 31), one customer lost power after a cutout broke on an electric pole at 1:24 p.m. Feb. 24.

In electrical distribution, a fuse coutout or cut-out fuse is a combination of a fuse and a switch, used in overhead power lines, to protect distribution transformers from current surges and overloads. Public Works crews replaced the part and energized the line at 3:33 p.m. Feb. 24.
