Power Outage
A severe thunderstorm that swept through the northern Illinois region Aug. 10 caused several power outages in various section of Geneva.

The power went out at 3:24 p.m. and again at 7:35 p.m. Aug. 10 for the Eaglebrook, Randall Square, Fisher Farms, Pepper Valley as well as other areas west of the Fox River and south of the railroad tracks. About 284 customers lost power initially, but 2,824 customers went offline in the evening after ComEd's feed to the City's substations dropped. Service was restored by 8:06 p.m.

Just under 1,100 customers in the Pepper Valley subdivision, Randall Road and other areas south of State Street and west of the Fox River lost power at 3:40 p.m. Aug. 10. ComEd's power feed to Geneva's substation was quickly restored.

The most extended storm-related outages took place at 4:44 p.m. Aug. 10 east of Fox River and south of State Street. Geneva's Public Works Department was able to restore power in stages at the following times:

  • 916 customers - 8:37 p.m.
  • 92 customers - 9:20 p.m.
  • 12 customers - 10:11 p.m.
  • 4 customers - midnight

Customers north of  State Street and west of the Fox River experienced momentary outages at 4:19 p.m., 4:26 p.m. and 4:35 p.m. Aug. 10. The City then had to take those same customers offline from 5:05 p.m. to 8:29 p.m. to repair an electric line down in the alley west of Richards Street. Other customers in the same area lost service from 7:35 to 7:52 p.m. after ComEd's power dropped from a City substation. In all, 2,026 customers were impacted.

At 8:30 a.m. Aug. 11, 20 customers lost service after a tree branch made contact with a primary electric wire causing sparking and burning. The impacted addresses were in the 700 and 800 blocks of North Lincoln and Logan avenues as well as the 1100 block of Union Street. Public Works de-energized the electric line to allow tree trimmers to remove the broken branch before power was restored at 10:45 a.m.

As a reminder, the best way to report power outages to the City after-hours or on weekends is by calling the Geneva Police Department's non-emergency number at 630-232-4736. Police will dispatch Public Works personnel to address the problem. The City's online request tracker and social media accounts are not monitored 24 hours a day.
