Power Outage
The Geneva Public Works Department is aware of four power outages taking place within a week on the City’s west side, specifically the Randall Square subdivision.

The two most recent incidents were instantaneous bumps that occurred at 8:41 p.m. Feb. 4 and 8:36 a.m. Feb. 7. ComEd power lines dropped service for less than 45 seconds in each case to the City’s South Street and Keslinger substations. The outage impacted, 2,587 customers each time along Randall Road, Randall Square, Fisher Farms, Pepper Valley, Kaneville Road and Peck Road.

The ComEd line problems, which took place outside Geneva’s City limits, likely stemmed from the weather. While the City owns and operates its own electric utility, ComEd lines do run through Geneva to supply power to the City’s substations.

The City also detailed two more power outages (83 customers Jan. 27 & 430 customers Feb. 1) that impacted Randall Square and surrounding areas in previous Powering Up blog entries. Those service disruptions stemmed from underground cable failures and a bad transformer.

Randall Square residents certainly have experienced an abnormal amount of outages recently, but the disruptions have happened independently of each other. Other than harsh winter weather, there were no commonalities or trends to suggest a widescale problem. Unfortunately, the same targeted audience in Randall Square has been affected each time.

The underground infrastructure in the subdivision has remaining useful life and will likely not need to be replaced until near the end of the decade. The City does replace underground cable on an annual basis to enhance electric service reliability, the most recent area being the Geneva East subdivision. The Public Works Department’s Electric Division will continue to monitor the situation in the coming days.

Residents who have questions can call the Electric Division at 630-232-1503.
