Union Pacific is building a third railroad line near the current UP-West railway tracks spanning from Peck Road in Geneva to West Chicago. Operations started in September, and the overall project is expected to be completed in July 2024.
Dec. 29 Update
Starting in January, the Union Pacific contractor will resume site preparation and boring into the ground on the west side of the Fox River. A majority of the activity is commencing near the train bridge and the Route 31 overflow commuter parking lot, which was closed earlier this year to use for equipment staging.
Union Pacific also will replace a large storm sewer pipe that runs underneath the train tracks. The pipe is located on Union Pacific property in between the South Street Athletic Fields on the north and Brigham Court on the south. Crews initially planned to start the project in December but decided to hold off until January. The work is weather-dependent.
