Union Pacific and Metra officials gave an update to the Geneva City Council Nov. 6 regarding the upcoming Third Main Line Project scheduled to start in late 2018. The third rail line will be installed primarily on the south side of the railroad tracks from Peck Road to West Chicago.

meeting video to get the full scope of the update.
During the discussion, the rail agencies said property surveying and acquisition will be ongoing through 2018. The property needing to be acquired borders the Union Pacific right-of-way and will often be narrow strips of land and not entire parcels.
The project will require staggered grade crossing closures at Route 31, Third Street and Western Avenue once construction gets underway. Only one crossing will be closed to car traffic at a time.
The majority of the construction will take place between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Friday, but there will be occasions when work will need to take place in the evenings or weekends. The overall project is expected to take 18 to 24 months to complete.
