********12:02 P.M. FEB. 1********
The National Weather Service has canceled the Winter Storm Warning for Kane County that was set to expire at 6 p.m. However, light snow still is expected throughout the day, and residents should keep their parked cars off the streets.
Small plow trucks have made one pass in each direction on residential streets to make them more drivable. Crews are now working on the cul-de-sacs. With snow still falling, Public Works is keeping an eye on maintaining clear thoroughfares when necessary and working on cul-de-sacs and other areas downtown.
While the worst of the storm appears to have past, crews are expected to continue working into the evening. Please make sure to give plows plenty of room to operate.
********9:26 A.M. FEB. 1********
Geneva already has received 3 inches of snow to this point, so the full snow parking ban is in effect. Please remove your cars from the street to help our snow plow operations.
Public Works has dedicated the large plows to clean main arterial roads while the small plows are making a pass in each direction to provide driving lanes on residential streets and cul-de-sacs. This process will continue throughout most of the day until the snow stops falling, which is expected by early this evening.
The Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for Kane County until 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1. Snow will continue to increase in intensity this morning. Snow totals have been revised to 4 to 8 inches of accumulation. At times today, snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are possible, making travel hazardous through early evening.
The Geneva Police Department urges residents to only travel in an emergency today.
********JANUARY 31********
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow, which is in effect from 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1.
Snow will develop late this evening and increase in intensity after midnight with a period of heavy snow possible during the mid to late morning hours Saturday. Experts are forecasting total snow accumulation of 6 to 10 inches before the storm is expected to end early Saturday evening.
The Geneva Police Department advises that you should avoid travel unless it is absolutely necessary during this time period. The roadways will become snow covered and treacherous very quickly. While our Public Works crews do a great job removing the snow, snow is predicted to fall at the rate of 1-2 inches per hour for a period of time tomorrow. This will make snow removal very difficult.
If you cannot avoid driving during this storm, please leave extra time for travel, leave plenty of space between you and other vehicles on the roadway, give snow plow operators ample space, and assure that you are prepared should your vehicle become stuck or disabled.
The Geneva Police Department would also like to remind all residents that parking on all emergency snow routes is prohibited when the snowfall exceeds 2 inches or more. The snow emergency routes are primarily heavily traveled roadways/main arterial streets throughout the city. It is strongly recommended that residents remove their cars from the streets when a snow storm is forecasted to avoid being ticketed or having their vehicles towed. Parking is not permitted on secondary streets at any time within 12 hours following a snowfall of 3 inches or more or until a street has been plowed to the curb.
There is a likelihood, that if the forecasted storm materializes as expected, that there will be a need to tow vehicles that are obstructing the work of the snow plow operators. Your cooperation and patience in removing your vehicles from the roadway is greatly appreciated.
Please be safe this weekend Geneva! As we have all month, we will be your weather central and keep you updated on our plowing efforts.
