[ARCHIVED] UPDATE: Union Pacific Finishes Emergency Repairs On Third Street Train Crossing

Union Pacific informed the City that the emergency repair work has been completed at 1:45 p.m. March 10 on the Third Street train crossing, and the area is open to vehicular traffic again.

********ORIGINAL NEWS RELEASE*******

Union Pacific will be closing the Third Street grade crossing in downtown Geneva for four days to vehicle traffic starting Friday, March 7 to make emergency repairs on two defective rail lines.

The grade crossing is scheduled to be closed following the morning rush hour March 7, and Union Pacific crews hope to reopen the area prior to the evening rush hour Monday, March 10.

Detour signs will be posted directing motorists heading north to continue on First Street (Route 31), west on Fulton Street and resume north on Third Street. The detour will be reversed for motorists heading south on Third Street.

With the barricades being set along the tracks, downtown patrons will be able to frequent restaurants, shops and the downtown parking deck. Commuters who utilize the parking lots on the south side of the tracks also will have pedestrian access to the Metra Station during construction.

The project is not expected to impact Metra's train schedule.

Any additional updates impacting the project timeline will be posted on the City’s website.
