[ARCHIVED] Charges Filed In Dec. 22 State Street Car Crash

Police News

A Batavia man has been charged with felony aggravated driving under the influence along with several misdemeanor offenses stemming from a Dec. 22 car crash in the 200 block of East State Street (Route 38) in Geneva.

David J. Walgenbach, 28, of the 400 block of Maves Drive, Batavia, was driving a silver 2014 Mazda CX-5 northbound on Crissey Avenue at 1:37 a.m. Dec. 22 when he allegedly failed to observe a stop sign at the State Street intersection. Walgenbach’s car entered the intersection, striking a silver 2005 Honda Accord driven by a 22-year-old Geneva resident.

The Honda Accord was pushed into the front yard of a residence on the north side of State Street. The vehicle came to rest after striking some bushes and cement stairs outside the home, which was not structurally damaged.

The Geneva Fire Department transported both drivers to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva for serious injuries. The Geneva resident was released from the hospital Dec. 24, and Walgenbach was discharged from medical care the following day. The roadway was closed for three hours as police investigated the crash.

Walgenbach has been charged with aggravated driving under the influence causing great bodily harm, expired registration, disobeying a stop sign, failure to wear a seatbelt, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of fireworks.

The accident remains under investigation by the Geneva Police Department pending a toxicology analysis. Questions regarding the incident should be directed to Geneva Police Commander Mike Frieders at 630-232-4736 or via email.
