[ARCHIVED] Geneva's Shakespeare In The Park Features 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' July 19

Bring the family for a unique – and free – take on Shakespeare at 6 p.m. Saturday, July 19 at Geneva’s Island Park along the beautiful Fox River.

The Midsummer Theatre Troupe will explore the themes of love, dreams, and magic as part of the eighth annual Shakespeare in the Park. “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” focuses on the adventures of two sets of young lovers and an amateur theater troupe. Set in a mythical city and an enchanted forest, the play chronicles their interactions with fairies and the duck and duchess.

Now in its 16th season as a mobile theater company, the Troupe performs Shakespeare with flair and comedy. The play is condensed to 90 minutes and features slapstick humor and physical gags that are appropriate for all ages.

Admission is free, but a $5 donation is suggested. Seating begins at 5 p.m. and is “Ravinia-style.” Patrons can bring blankets, chairs and a picnic dinner to the event. A pre-show performance by the State Street Dance Studio dancers kicks off the festivities at 6 p.m.

Food will be available to purchase from Stockholm’s and Graham’s Fine Chocolates and Ice Cream. Circa will have Shakespeare items for sale, and the Geneva Public Library staff will be roaming the festival with a fun photo opportunity. Patrons are encouraged to bring their own cameras.

Island Park is located at the corner of State Street and Route 25. Free parking is available at the Kane County Government Center, 719 Batavia Ave., which is just a short walk across the covered bridge over the Fox River to the park.

Shakespeare in the Park is sponsored by the City of Geneva’s Cultural Arts Commission. For more information about the event, call 630-938-4530 or visit www.genevarts.org.
