Union Pacific is building a third railroad line near the current UP-West railway tracks spanning from Peck Road in Geneva to West Chicago. Operations started in 2022 and the overall project is expected to be completed in July 2024.
July 6 Update
The Route 31 underpass closure has been delayed to at least Monday, July 17 as Union Pacific awaits permits from the State of Illinois. Once underway, the closure is expected to last four to six weeks, weather permitting. Full details were outlined in a June 30 City news release.
Starting the week of July 10, third rail construction will take place near the Randall Road overpass for about two weeks. Crews will primarily be working on the shoulder, but the project may require intermittent traffic lane closures.
Union Pacific announced its contractor will be working on Saturdays going forward to keep on schedule.
