Garbage / Recycling / Yard Waste

Garbage Contract Update

The Geneva City Council approved a new five-year garbage contract June 5 with LRS, the City’s current refuse provider.

Collection days and services (including electronics recycling, the food scrap program and yard waste pickup) are remaining the same as part of the new contract, which will run from July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2028. Residents can keep disposing of trash with a “pay as you throw” user-base model using waste stickers or continue subscribing to their existing LRS garbage cart. Customers also can continue using their existing recycling carts as normal.

The current light blue stickers with an expiration date of June 30, 2023 will be valid through July 31, 2023. Residents should be mindful of how many stickers they purchase in June.

The City and LRS also are working to establish a waste sticker exchange program where residents will be able to trade in their existing, expiring stickers for new ones. Details will be announced later this month.

The start of the new contract brings new refuse rates for stickers and cart service. The new blue and white stickers that are part of the 2023-28 contract will be available to purchase at the City’s Finance Department, 15 S. First St.; and at select local retailers in the coming weeks.

As a reminder, stickers should be looped around the garbage can handles so LRS drivers can rip them off easily. Customers who affix the sticker flat on their garbage can or lid risk not having their trash picked up that week.

Geneva’s current contract with LRS (Lakeshore Recycling Systems) started July 1, 2018 and runs through June 30, 2023.

Please note, the City’s garbage contract does not apply to residents of the Mill Creek subdivision, which is unincorporated. Please call Kane County regarding garbage questions.

Stickers

Geneva Garbage Sticker

Residents choosing the "pay as you throw" option must place one waste sticker on each bag or trash can. Please note, cans must be limited to 32 gallons or 50 pounds. Items over 50 pounds may need to be scheduled for removal.

Stickers placed on trash cans must be visible from the street and looped around the handles for the LRS driver to easily rip off. Customers risk not having their garbage picked up if they affix stickers flatly onto a garbage can or lid.

Sticker prices and retail locations are available online. Residents also can purchase the stickers in sheets online via the City’s website.

Yard waste and bulk items also require waste stickers.

FYI, the existing blue refuse stickers with an expiration date of June 30, 2023 will be valid through the month of July 2023 as part of the new contract.

LRS Garbage Carts

Residents can choose to dispose of their trash with a garbage cart issued from LRS. Carts come in 35, 65 or 95-gallon sizes, all of which carry a monthly subscription charge. No refuse stickers are necessary when utilizing the carts.

20-Gallon Waste Bags

Residents also have the option of purchasing 20-gallon waste bags that are sold in rolls of 10 at select locations. See garbage rates for price details.

Recycling

Every home serviced by LRS should have received a 65-gallon recycling cart free of charge. Visit the recycling page for program details.
