Union Pacific is building a third railroad line near the current UP-West railway tracks spanning from Peck Road in Geneva to West Chicago. Operations started in 2022 and the overall project is expected to be completed in 2024.
March 14 Update
The contractor will begin excavation work near the Route 31 underpass on Wednesday, March 20, weather permitting. The construction operations will produce plenty of noise and dust in the surrounding area. The underpass was closed to motorists starting March 4 and will remain shut down until late June.
Crews continue digging ditches and grading the surface for the future third rail line from the western City limit to Western Avenue.
