Union Pacific is building a third railroad line near the current UP-West railway tracks spanning from Peck Road in Geneva to West Chicago. Operations started in 2022, and the overall project is expected to be completed in 2024 or possibly 2025.
June 13 Update
Union Pacific informed the City that the Route 31 underpass shutdown has been extended until at least Monday, Aug. 5. The date is subject to change.
The delay stems from Union Pacific experiencing conflicts with utility relocations needed as part of the Third Main Line project.
With the Route 31 project taking longer than originally forecasted, the timelines for the future Third Street and Western Avenue grade crossing closures also have been altered. Union Pacific envisions starting work on Third Street in late summer or early fall after work has been completed at Route 31. The new start date for Western Avenue will be announced in the future.
The construction contractor announced crews will be working on some Saturdays intermittently as the weather allows.
