Geneva owns and operates its own electric utility, and we take great pride in providing reliable electric service to our residents and businesses. However, like all utilities, we are susceptible to outages caused by bad weather, animals, equipment issues and more. This blog is designed to provide updates on what caused outages after service has been restored. Large-scale incidents will be posted in real-time on the City's Alert Center on the our website homepage. Customers can subscribe to receive these updates via Notify Me.

[ARCHIVED] IDOT ADA Improvements Scheduled For Route 31 & State Street

The original item was published from June 18, 2024 2:52 PM to September 1, 2024 12:00 AM

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) will resume making ADA improvements Friday, May 17 at the Route 31 and State Street (Route 38) intersection in Geneva.

The State's contractor will be closing the northbound travel lane on Route 31 on the north side of the intersection May 17. One temporary northbound lane will be open but shifted west to use what normally is the southbound left-hand turn lane. Southbound Route 31 drivers will have only one lane as they approach the State Street intersection and will not have a dedicated left-hand turn lane to head east on State Street. Motorists should expect considerable delays and may want to consider alternate routes to reach their destination.

Construction crews will be pouring concrete, which will result in leaving the temporary traffic pattern in place over the weekend as the new surface cures.

Asphalt work is scheduled to take place Monday to Wednesday, May 20-22 at all four corners of the Route 31 and State Street intersection, weather permitting. Drivers should again expect delays and consider alternate routes. For those that do travel through the intersection, pay attention for construction workers and signage.

Once completed, another contractor will be removing pavement markings at the Route 31 and State Street intersection followed by the application of new pavement markings. A schedule for this work has not been determined.

The overall IDOT Route 31 ADA improvement project began last fall, and continued this spring.

The following Route 31 intersections are being improved:

  • North Street;
  • Stevens Street;
  • Ford Street;
  • Peyton Street (including removal of sidewalk crossing);
  • Hamilton Street (including removal of sidewalk crossing);
  • State Street (Route 38);
  • James Street;
  • Campbell Street (including removal of southern sidewalk crossing);
  • Franklin Street (including removal of sidewalk crossing); and
  • Third Street.

The project also involves installing new pedestrian signals at the State and Third streets intersections.

Many of the Geneva intersections, outside of State and James streets, have been substanially completed.

The project is being managed by IDOT, which also decided to remove the selected sidewalk crossings. The City of Geneva does not have jurisdiction on the matter since Route 31 is a state highway.
