This blog is designed to provide updates on what caused outages after service has been restored. Union Pacific is building a third railroad line near the current UP-West railway tracks spanning from Peck Road in Geneva to West Chicago. Operations started in 2022, and the overall project is expected to be completed in spring 2025.

Nov. 7 Update

The construction contractor is now anticipating the Western Avenue railroad crossing will be reopened to motorists by Friday, Nov. 15, weather permitting. Crews still need to pour concrete and finish asphalt resurfacing in the area in the coming days.

The Fox River Trail just south of Island Park will continue to be closed to the public through Nov. 15 to accommodate construction operations. That section of trail along the east bank of the Fox River was shut down on Nov. 4. The Fox River Trail is closed to northbound, southbound and feeder trail traffic. Trail patrons should adhere to signage where posted and plan for alternative routes.

The Route 31 overflow parking lot south of the underpass could possibly be reopened by Thanksgiving.

The Third Street commuter permit parking lot on the southwest side of the tracks is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2024.

All schedules are subject to change due to weather or construction delays.
