Union Pacific is building a third railroad line near the current UP-West railway tracks spanning from Peck Road in Geneva to West Chicago. Operations started in 2022, and the overall project is expected to be completed in spring 2025.
Oct. 25 Update
Union Pacific says the third rail construction near Western Avenue remains on schedule to be finished by Friday, Nov. 8. The Western Avenue railroad crossing was shut down Oct. 7 for five weeks.
The Third Street permit parking lots south of the tracks are expected to reopen to commuters by Tuesday, Dec. 31. The parking lots are anticipated to remain open during the winter but will be closed again in spring 2025 as crews build the new train platform.
All schedules are subject to change due to weather or construction delays.
