Union Pacific is building a third railroad line near the current UP-West railway tracks spanning from Peck Road in Geneva to West Chicago. Operations started in 2022, and the overall project is expected to be completed in spring 2025.
Dec. 19 Update
The general project contractor is planning to reopen both sides of the Fox River Trail Dec. 19. Crews were removing the detour signs and installing the trail signage. The only remaining item on the east side of the trail is the replacement of the Wastewater Treatment Plant fence, which will take place from Thursday, Jan. 16 to Friday, Jan. 24, weather permitting.
The City was informed the commuter parking lots south of the train tracks (two on Third Street and the Route 31 overflow lot) will remain closed throughout the winter for construction.
The general project contractor anticipates finishing construction by January. However, operations will continue into the spring as Union Pacific crews install the third rail, train track traffic signals and other railroad improvements.
All schedules are subject to change due to weather or construction delays.
