Geneva owns and operates its own electric utility, and we take great pride in providing reliable electric service to our residents and businesses. However, like all utilities, we are susceptible to outages caused by bad weather, animals, equipment issues and more. This blog is designed to provide updates on what caused outages after service has been restored. Union Pacific is building a third railroad line near the current UP-West railway tracks spanning from Peck Road in Geneva to West Chicago. Operations started in 2022 and the overall project is expected to be completed in July 2024.

June 22 Update

The Union Pacific contractor announced both commuter parking lots on Third Street just south of the train tracks will be closed for reconstruction starting the week of June 26. Tree removals are slated for late June followed by lot demolition and excavation following the July 4 holiday. The permit lots will be shut down for the foreseeable future.

Signage and a message board will be posted alerting commuters of the changes. Commuter permit parking remains open north of the tracks near Fourth Street.

Starting the week of June 26, construction crews will be working along the southwest shoulder of Route 31. Traffic lanes in both directions will remain open, but there may be times where flaggers are present to direct motorists.

Finally, prep work for the new third rail line will begin in late June from Sandholm Street to Kirk Road. Crews will be stripping the soil and building a gravel base.
