Geneva owns and operates its own electric utility, and we take great pride in providing reliable electric service to our residents and businesses. However, like all utilities, we are susceptible to outages caused by bad weather, animals, equipment issues and more. This blog is designed to provide updates on what caused outages after service has been restored. Large-scale incidents will be posted in real-time on the City's Alert Center on the our website homepage. Customers can subscribe to receive these updates via Notify Me.

Union Pacific is building a third railroad line near the current UP-West railway tracks spanning from Peck Road in Geneva to West Chicago. Operations started in 2022 and the overall project is expected to be completed in July 2024.

May 5 Update

The Union Pacific contractor announced the commuter parking lot at 607 S. Third St. (south of the tracks on the east side of the roadway) will be closed starting Tuesday, May 9 as part of the Third Main Line project. The parking lot will be shut down for the foreseeable future.

Starting the week of May 15, the contractor will be doing work along the Route 31 curb line and shoulder along areas near railroad tracks. The underpass will remain open to traffic, but there will be intermittent lane closures throughout the day. Construction is estimated to take about one week.

Union Pacific is working to determine the future Route 31 underpass closure schedule. The City will notify residents when information is made available.

Construction also continues along the Fox River to expand the train bridge.
