[ARCHIVED] Storm - July 28

The original item was published from August 3, 2023 9:38 AM to October 4, 2023 12:00 AM

Just under 300 east side Geneva customers lost power due to storms sweeping through the area July 28.

The outage occurred at 8:38 p.m. when the storm and strong winds caused a ComEd 34kV line to open and close automatically, which locked out the breakers/relay at a City substation. The service disruption impacted customers on Kirkwood Drive, Kirk Road, Averill Circle and Fabyan Parkway.

The Geneva Public Works Department redistributed customers to another City substation until the breaker/relay were manually reset by ComEd. All 297 customers were brought back online by 9:38 p.m.

While the City owns and operates its own utility, ComEd lines supply power to our Geneva electric substations.

As a reminder, residents should report outages after hours and on weekends to the Geneva Police Department non-emergency number at 630-232-4736. Police will then dispatch the on-call Public Works personnel. The City does not monitor social media channels and the online request system 24 hours a day.
