The Geneva Public Works Department responded to two power outages early Sept. 20.
The first outage occurred at 4 a.m. when lightning struck a City transformer causing six customers on Fifth, Fulton and South streets to lose power. The Public Works Electric Division refused and energized the transformer to restore service by 8:25 a.m.
The second, larger service disruption took place at 6:24 a.m. when an electric pole cross-arm failed, which impacted 1,426 customers on the east side of Geneva. Public Works crews closed the 34kv tie breaker and brought 93% of the outage area back online by 6:57 a.m. The remaining 98 customers had power restored by 7:22 a.m.
As a reminder, residents should report outages after hours and on weekends to the Geneva Police Department non-emergency number at 630-232-4736. Police will then dispatch the on-call Public Works personnel. The City does not monitor social media channels and the online request system 24 hours a day.
