The Kautz Road reconstruction and widening project is a joint venture between the City of Geneva and St. Charles. Construction will occur from Swenson Avenue in St. Charles to just north of State Street (Route 38) in Geneva. The project will replace failing pavement, enhance freight mobility, mitigate drainage issues, complete trail connectivity, improve safety measures, and support economic development in the area.
Construction started in June 2024 and is expected to be substantially completed by the end of the year, with landscape restoration and other punch list items being finished in spring 2025.
Aug. 16 Update
Construction crews will continue to work on stormwater drainage improvements the week of Aug. 19. ComEd is on site and coordinating planned power outages with nearby St. Charles residents and businesses as needed to relocate their electric poles. The relocations also are impacting Comcast service in the area, which is being handled separately.
The next phase of construction will occur in the northbound lanes between Averill Road in Geneva and Toni Street in St. Charles beginning Tuesday, Sept. 3. Once operations get underway, only the southbound lanes of Kautz Road will remain open to traffic. The official detour will direct motorists to head west on Route 38, north on Kirk Road and east on Swenson Avenue. This phase is expected to be completed in late October.
All construction activities are weather-dependent.
