[ARCHIVED] Public Works To Flush Fire Hydrants This Fall

Fire Hydrant Flushing 2

Geneva Public Works will begin flushing fire hydrants citywide starting in late October or early November as part of an ongoing maintenance program.

Hydrants will be flushed from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Friday. The water is safe to drink, but residents are encouraged to let their faucets run for a few minutes if they notice any discoloration.

When crews are in their neighborhood, residents should:

  • Limit water use, if possible
  • Refrain from doing laundry to prevent staining due to rusty water
  • Keep their laundry wet if it becomes discolored and purchase a rust-removing solution packet from a local retailer

Signs will be posted in neighborhoods to alert residents when flushing is underway. A hydrant flushing progress map will be available on the City’s website. The start date is dependent on the completion of the Kirk Road water tower painting project. Hydrant flushing is expected to be finished in about three weeks, weather permitting.

Hydrant flushing improves the water quality by clearing rust and sediment from water mains while ensuring the hydrants are working properly.
