[ARCHIVED] Trees Removal Scheduled For East State Street Reconstruction

East State Street Reconstruction

Construction crews will remove 47 parkway trees in November as part of the East State Street reconstruction project in Geneva.

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) plans to rebuild East State Street (Route 38) from Glengarry Drive to the Fox River. The multi-year project encompasses roadway widening, streetscape enhancements, bike lanes, traffic signal upgrades, new street lighting, and water main/storm drainage infrastructure improvements.

The trees must be removed to accommodate the highway expansion. However, trees will be a major role in the corridor's future appearance. When the project is completed, 290 new trees featuring a diverse mix of species will be planted along East State Street.

During the past few months, utility companies have been relocating underground infrastructure, resulting in lane closures in both directions.

The full East State Street reconstruction project is tentatively scheduled to start in spring 2026 and be completed in late 2027, with punch list items to be finished the following year. The timeline is dependent on how quickly the utility relocations are resolved.

More information, including project updates, can be found on the East State Street Reconstruction web page.
