[ARCHIVED] Kane County Suspends Electronics Recycling Program

Kane County is suspending its free electronics recycling program due to a veritable tsunami of televisions coming into the recycling collection events, resulting in overwhelming and unmanageable attendance at the County’s April and May events in St. Charles.

The County is working on solutions to the electronics recycling problem, and hopes to reinstate the monthly electronics collection event once additional drop-off locations are available. The County Recycling Coordinator Jennifer Jarland is focusing solely on that project. The long-term sustainable solution lies in spreading the load and providing conveniently located drop-offs with weekday hours.

The Kane County Recycles webpage (see link below) has posted a list of alternative electronics recycling locations for your convenience. It is important to note that it is now standard for TVs and some computer monitors to have a cost to recycle. This is true for the locations on the list and will also apply to any new drop-offs that open, as well as the County event when it is reinstated.

Please keep an eye on the Kane County Recycles website for updates to the electronics recycling program.

The Saturday, June 11 Recycling Extravaganza is still on, but electronics will not be accepted.

The annual event offers free confidential document shredding on site. The following will be accepted free of charge for recycling: books, bikes, bike parts, helmets, wheel chairs, crutches, sewing machines, styrofoam, packing peanuts (contained in a tightly tied bag), bubble wrap and 4-foot fluorescent tubes. Liquid Latex Paint will also be accepted for a per-can fee, payable by the resident ($2/quart, $3.50/gallon, $5.50/2 gallons, $10/5 gallons) by cash or check.

The Extravaganza event will run from 8 a.m. to noon June 11, at the Kane County branch court office at 540 S. Randall in St. Charles.
