Geneva is seeking candidates to represent the 3rd Ward after Alderman Dawn Vogelsberg resigned from the City Council this week.

Residents interested in serving on the City Council must submit a letter of interest and resume postmarked no later than Monday, Feb. 3 to Mayor Kevin Burns, Geneva City Hall, 22 S. First St., Geneva, IL 60134. The envelope should include the reference “3rd Ward Alderman” on the front.

Candidates must meet the following eligibility requirements in order to be considered for the position:

• Be a legal U.S. citizen;
• Live in Geneva’s 3rd Ward for a minimum of one year;
• Be a registered voter;
• Have no felony convictions; and
• Be current on taxes and payments to the City.

Alderman Vogelsberg announced her resignation during the Jan. 21 City Council meeting after serving the 3rd Ward for 10 years. Under state statute, Mayor Burns is responsible for submitting an appointee for consideration by the Geneva City Council within 60 days of a vacancy.

Mayor Burns will review all the applications and plans to bring his nomination choice forward to the City Council by the end of February for a formal vote.

The newly seated alderman will serve on the City Council through April 2015 and have the option to run in the consolidated election April 7, 2015 for a two-year term that will expire in 2017.

The 3rd Ward is located on Geneva’s northeast side with approximate boundaries including Division Street, Woodward Avenue, East Side Drive, State Street and Kautz Road. A ward map can be found on the City’s website at the link below.
