[ARCHIVED] Illinois Officials Issue Warning About Mysterious Seeds

Geneva residents who receive an unsolicited package of seeds from China or any other foreign country should report the matter to the Illinois Department of Agriculture.

Anyone who receives unordered seeds in the mail is being asked to contact the State’s Department of Agriculture via email and include the following information:

  • First and last name;
  • Phone number; and
  • Number of packages received

"Do not open the package, plant the seeds, or throw them out," the department made in a statement. "Please keep all seeds unopened and with their original packaging and labels, including mailing labels, until further instruction is provided.

With the State handling the investigation along with the federal government, residents should contact the Illinois Department of Agriculture directly opposed to the Geneva Police Department. The U.S. Department of Agriculture also provided information on the distribution of the mysterious seeds.
