[ARCHIVED] Tri-Cities Traffic Safety Initiative Results Announced

Police News - New Car

More than 350 drivers were stopped during a joint traffic safety campaign conducted by the Geneva, St. Charles and Batavia police departments from May 23 to Memorial Day.

The law enforcement agencies concentrated their efforts along four main highways that stretched between the three communities, including Randall Road, Route 31, Route 25, and Kirk Road.

“The goal of this traffic initiative, leading into the unofficial start of summer, was to reduce crashes and raise awareness of some of the leading causes of crashes that we are seeing. The results of the enforcement efforts were staggering,” St. Charles Police Commander Rich Clark said.

In total, 373 drivers were stopped during the campaign for violations such as speeding, distracted driving, and seat belt usage. Police also were enforcing “Scott’s Law,” also known as the move over law, requiring drivers to change lanes, if they can do so safely, or reduce their speed significantly upon approaching any emergency vehicle or other vehicle stopped on the side of the road.

“The largest number of stops made by officers were for speeding,” Clark said. “Statistically, this is the leading cause of injury and fatal crashes in the United States. As we head into the summer months, we want to ensure everyone arrives at their destinations safely.”

All three departments noted they plan to continue their enforcement efforts in hopes of reducing crashes throughout the summer and keeping local roadways as safe as possible.
