Changes made by Kane County’s electronics recycling vendor has resulted in the closing of the collection site at Geneva’s Public Works Department, 1800 South St. The last day to drop off old electronics is Tuesday, Dec. 15.

With state law prohibiting disposing of computer monitors, printers and televisions in landfills, Geneva residents will now have to utilize the following free recycling location:

• Kane County Circuit Court Clerk’s Office, 540 S. Randall Road, St. Charles. The County’s monthly collection is held from 8 a.m. to noon on the second Saturday of each month April through November.

Kane County’s recycling program has been very well-received by Geneva residents since its inception in 2012. Due to many factors, the Geneva collection site is no longer deemed feasible by the City, Kane County or the County’s vendor.

Currently, the contractor provides a large covered dumpster at the Geneva Public Works Department where residents place their old or unwanted electronics. When the dumpster is full, City staff notifies the contractor to exchange the full dumpster with an empty one.

However, the County’s vendor has modified its business model to collect more materials per pickup and to cut down on operating costs. The new program calls for residents to drop off their materials on pallets or shipping boxes, which Geneva Public Works employees would have to load into a semi-trailer. The process would be more labor intensive for City staff to repack and lift heavy palletized/boxed materials into the truck.

At the same time, the contractor has elected to eliminate the Geneva location given the close proximity to Kane County's collection site.

Both the Geneva City Council and Kane County Board will vote to dissolve the existing intergovernmental agreement at separate meetings in December.
