[ARCHIVED] State Police Public Integrity Task Force Investigate Kane County SWAT Officer Involved Shooting

GENEVA - On 5/13/17, the Illinois State Police {ISP) Public Integrity Task Force (PITF) was requested by the Kane County Sheriff to investigate the use of force during an Officer Involved Shooting that occurred at Delnor Hospital, in Geneva, Illinois.

On 5/13/17, Kane County SWAT responded to a barricade hostage situation at Delnor Hospital in which Tywon Salters, male, 21 of Chicago, held a nurse at gunpoint in a hospital room. Negotiations between Kane County SWAT and Salters deteriorated and SWAT entered the hospital room to rescue the hostage victim.  During entry, a Kane County SWAT member fired their weapon, fatally striking Salters. Salters was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The preliminary investigation indicated Salters took a weapon from a corrections officer,then held two nurses hostage during the incident. The weapon was recovered at the scene.

An autopsy will be scheduled by the Kane County Coroner.

This case remains an open and ongoing investigation. No further information is being released at this time. All media inquiry regarding the investigation should be directed to the Illinois State Police Public Information Office at pio@isp.state.il.us.

The public is reminded that all persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
