Alex Voigt Appointed Geneva's Next City Administrator

City News Posted on August 04, 2025

Alex Voigt has been named Geneva’s next City Administrator, bringing 15 years of municipal experience serving in a variety of leadership positions with the City of Aurora.

The Geneva City Council tonight approved the appointment of Voigt to replace City Administrator Stephanie Dawkins, who announced her retirement effective Friday, Aug. 15. The City Administrator supervises all department heads, manages the day-to-day operations of the City government, and serves as budget officer, overseeing the preparation of the annual budget for City Council approval.

Voigt is expected to start her new job in early September.

“Ms. Voigt’s professional and interpersonal skills are exactly what our community deserves to help advance the principles of Geneva’s 2030 Strategic Plan and beyond,” Mayor Kevin Burns said. “Her highly respected team building, communications, collaboration, and fidelity to good governance make her the perfect chief administrative officer to help guide Geneva’s future and elevate our promise and potential.”

Voigt has more than 10 years of experience in government administration, most recently serving as Deputy Chief of Staff for Illinois’ second-largest city. She worked closely with elected officials (city, state and federal), city staff, municipal advisory boards, and residents.

Voigt’s experience includes daily operations for the Mayor’s Office, supervision of seven different city departments, Aurora’s 30+ boards and commissions, and assisting with budget planning. She also provided direction on the role of Aurora’s Emergency Management Division and led modernization efforts for several of the city’s online platforms.

Voigt has a strong background in research, development and implementation of municipal policies and community engagement. Her accomplishments include:

  • Establishing a new structure for Aurora’s boards and commissions, adding 10 new advisory groups
  • Leading Aurora’s special census efforts
  • Creating a special event ordinance with an online permitting process
  • Drafting Aurora’s first mobile food unit ordinance
  • Revamping Aurora’s liquor code to streamline licensing and encourage economic development

“I am thrilled to join the City of Geneva and honored to step into the role of City Administrator,” Voigt said. “Geneva's vibrant community, strong civic values, and commitment to thoughtful growth make it a truly special place. I look forward to working with the City Council, City staff and the residents to contribute to the continued success of this great city.”

Before being named Deputy Chief of Staff, Voigt earned promotions with the City of Aurora, serving as Assistant to the Mayor, Management Analyst, Interim Emergency Management Coordinator, and twice as Interim City Clerk.

Voigt holds a Master of Public Administration degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio and will soon receive her certificate of Executive Education from the Harvard Kennedy School.
