In mid-March, the Illinois Department of Transportation is scheduled to begin a multi-year reconstruction project that will transform the East State Street (Route 38) corridor in Geneva.

Work will start with the installation of a new sanitary sewer main down the center of the state highway. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction (curbside lanes)  from Route 25 to near Nebraska Street. IDOT’s contractor is expected to establish the new traffic pattern the week of March 16, with construction beginning the following week, weather permitting.  

The work zone will expand down the center lanes in both directions to Sandholm Street once AT&T completes its ongoing utility relocation project in April.

This “pre-stage phase” of construction is anticipated to be finished by May, weather permitting. The schedule is subject to change, and the City encourages residents to visit our project web page for the latest updates.

The East State Street reconstruction will rebuild the highway from Glengarry Drive to the Fox River. The project encompasses new street lighting, sidewalks, roadway widening to incorporate a shared left turn lane throughout the corridor, new trees, bike lanes, streetscape enhancements, traffic signal upgrades, and water main/storm drainage infrastructure improvements.

Construction generally will occur from 7 a.m. to the close of business Monday to Saturday, with some occasional evening work. Motorists should expect substantial traffic lane closures throughout the project.

The full East State Street reconstruction project is expected to be completed in late 2027, with punch list items to be finished the following year. Future project phases can be found on the City’s website.
