Union Pacific announced the Third Street railroad crossing is scheduled to reopen to traffic Friday, Oct. 4 after being shut down since mid-August for the rail company’s Third Main Line project.

After Third Street reopens, crews will perform additional restoration work and sign installation. Union Pacific’s construction operations will shift to Western Avenue starting Monday, Oct. 7. The railroad crossing, including the pedestrian crossing, is anticipated to be closed for five weeks. All schedules are subject to change due to weather or construction delays.

With the Western Avenue railroad crossing closed, the official detour will direct motorists to travel west on Fabyan Parkway, north on Randall Road, east on Kaneville Road, south on Gary Lane and east on South Street. The directions will be reversed for drivers wanting to head south on Western Avenue. Motorists also can use Third Street or Route 31 to bypass the tracks.

Outside of the railroad crossing, Western Avenue will remain open to drivers on both sides of the train racks along with all adjacent side streets and the Geneva Park District’s Sunset Community Center, 710 Western Ave.

Union Pacific began the Third Main Line project in 2022. The company is installing a third railroad line near the current UP-West railway tracks spanning from Peck Road in Geneva to West Chicago. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
