[ARCHIVED] Geneva Named Tree City USA, Parkway Tree Update

Downtown Trees

Geneva has been named a "Tree City USA" community for the 25th time thanks to the City's ongoing commitment to effective urban forest management.

The Arbor Day Foundation's honor is based on meeting four core standards, including maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry and conducting an Arbor Day observance.

Geneva also received its third Arbor Day Foundation's Growth Award, which recognizes major milestones and annual activities that combine to build a sustainable community forestry program. This award is given to municipalities based on forestry funding/staff/training; measuring tree inventory; urban planning; planting/protecting parkway trees; and community involvement.

The City will plant 77 new parkway trees throughout Geneva during the weeks of April 21 and April 28, weather permitting. This includes trees residents ordered for this spring.

Helping contribute to the cause, the City of Geneva's Natural Resources Committee and Geneva Park District Foundation raised money during February's virtual Wine, Cheese & Trees fundraiser. The money will be used by both groups to plant trees in Geneva's parkways, parks and open spaces throughout the community.

People interested in a new parkway tree for the fall season can visit the City's website to learn more about our cost-sharing program.
