The Geneva Police Department is joining law enforcement agencies across Illinois for “Speed Awareness Day” on Wednesday, July 23, as part of a statewide effort to reduce speed-related crashes.

In partnership with the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police and more than 300 law enforcement agencies, Geneva Police will increase patrols throughout the day to target speeding and other traffic violations. Geneva Police urge drivers to slow down and make the safe choice.

Speeding is involved in 45% of all motor vehicle fatalities, 36% of all injury crashes, and 31% of all roadway crashes, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation’s 2023 Illinois Crash Facts and Statistics.

Speeding is a choice that puts everyone at risk. It reduces a driver’s ability to steer safely around other vehicles, increases stopping distance, and can lead to more severe crashes.

The Illinois Speed Awareness Day campaign has a two-fold approach: public education on the risks of speeding and an increased zero-tolerance enforcement effort. The ultimate goal of the campaign is to raise awareness and save lives.  

This speed education and enforcement effort is part of the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police's “Speeding Catches Up with You” awareness campaign and aligns with IDOT’s broader “It’s Not a Game” media campaign.
